The Weijue Book House, a public cultural space, aims to make people think about reading and life.

A brick-and-mortar bookstore that neither sells nor lends books has opened at the Wang family’s old residence in Songjiang’s Cangcheng district.

The idea of making the Weijue Book House a public cultural space was inspired by a reading and performing arts exhibition.

Weijue comes from an ancient Chinese verse to mark the impermanence of life and to remind of the value of time.

In December 2020, five post-1970 experts from different professions launched a 15-day performing arts exhibition that encouraged visitors to read on site.

The exhibition of more than 3,000 books at Songjiang Cloth Art Gallery turned out to be an internet hit on social media.

“We didn’t expect it to be such a hit,” said Dong Ye, an initiator of the performing arts exhibition. “Quite a few visitors shared their insights, memories and feelings with us during the exhibition.

“Some reiterated their hope that the exhibition could somehow continue,” Dong said. “Earlier this year, we heard that the Wang family’s old residence in Cangcheng Historical and Cultural Zone was awaiting renovation.”

The old residence was the home of the famous Songjiang calligrapher Wang Ziyi (1894-1975).

After the renovation, the residence has pleased five friends with its antique roof and walls, the lush greenery and the beautiful courtyard.

“We were excited about the place and started imagining a future book house,” Dong Ye said.

The five founders – painter Dong Ye, photographer Goto, gardener Yun Jian Yu Fu, costume brand manager Jay and designer Apd – were old friends who loved books.

The ancient residence houses five separate rooms and each displays books and crafts on different themes – art and literature at Dong Ye, photography at Goto, horticulture at Yun Jian Yu Fu, costumes and folk culture at Jay, and film and characters at Apd.

“Our jobs are all related to art. We hope that the books we have collected over the years can make people think about reading and life,” Goto said.
