While horror fans expect the body count to pile up in any slasher movie, there are some deaths that are truly infuriating and sad to watch. These characters could be past girls’ best friends, family members who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, or people who only appear on screen briefly and face a brutal ending. While the killers in these films will of course commit murder, there are some scenes that are particularly difficult, painful, and emotional to watch.
From a major death in Scream (2022) It’s still a shame for fans to think of one of the people Michael Myers kills in Halloween (1978) there are several deaths in slasher films that are as heartbreaking as they are an important part of the story.
Final Girl Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) best friend, Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes), is trying to have a fun Halloween night when Michael Myers kills her from the back seat of her car. This death is really sad as Laurie, Annie and Lynda Van der Klok (PJ Soles) are good friends who genuinely care about each other and seem to have a happy, regular high school experience.
While there is a lot going on in the Halloween movies from which Halloween Franchise timeline to the many times Michael Myers has returned to Haddonfield, Illinois to kill people, Annie’s death is particularly emotional. Laurie expected to have a normal evening babysitting, and instead she mourns the loss of her two best friends and realizes that life will never be the same again. Laurie also has to come to terms with the fact that Michael nearly killed her.
Jada Pinkett-Smith starred scream 2 as Maureen Evans, a young woman who attends a screening of prick with her boyfriend Phil Stevens (Omar Epps). Phil is a huge horror fan and Maureen isn’t at all. While Maureen suffers for most of the film and wishes the characters would show more intelligence, Phil leaves to use the washroom, where Ghostface is known to stab him in the ear.
Maureen is murdered during the screening and this makes for a shocking opening that helps scream 2 is a great horror sequel. This is an absolutely horrifying and gruesome journey, especially as Maureen is brutally stabbed and the audience looks on, thinking it’s part of the movie experience.
The end of Fear Street Part Two: 1978 is shocked when fans learn that Gillian Jacob’s character, who goes by the name Nam C. Berman, is actually Ziggy, who survived the Camp Nightwing massacre. Ziggy’s (Sadie Sink) older sister Cindy (Emily Rudd) offers herself to the killer when she wants to save Ziggy.
Not only is it heartbreaking to watch Cindy die, but even worse to see an adult Ziggy still grieving the loss of her sibling. Ziggy may be an adult now, but she has isolated herself thanks to everything she has learned about the mystery, and the other characters can see that Ziggy will never get over this death.
Ti Wests X is packed with storytelling and Jenna Ortega is impressive as Lorraine, a young woman who accompanies her boyfriend RJ (Owen Campbell) to the country to make an adult film. While it’s sad to see the other characters killed, including Brittany Snow’s character Bobby-Lynne being eaten by an alligator, there’s something particularly unsettling about Lorraine’s death.
Howard (Stephen Ure) and Pearl (Mia Goth) lock Lorraine in their basement and severely injure her hand. As Lorraine stares in shock at her bloody hand, the audience can’t help but wish she could find a way to save herself. Lorraine’s death is even worse because she is so close to getting out alive, but Howard shoots her as she walks through the front door of his home.
It’s hard to overstate how sad it is to see Dewey Riley die Scream (2022). Not only is it heartbreaking to imagine not seeing David Arquette in future films since the actor portrayed the role so well, but Dewey has been such an integral part of the slasher franchise.
No matter how many times fans see the fifth Scream movie, watching Dewey’s death scene in the hospital will never be easy. He confronts Ghostface and after protecting the people of Woodsboro for so many years, Dewey loses his life. It’s hard to watch without breaking into tears when Dewey has helped Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) so much and he and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) have so much left unsaid.
