The founders of the Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, have canceled the satirical award they created to poke fun at Bruce Willis for his body of work in 2021.
- The Razzies spear what they consider to be Hollywood’s worst films and performances
- Shelley Duvall’s nomination for The Shining was withdrawn following reports that she was abused during production
- Will Smith won the Redeemer Award for his Oscar-winning performance in King Richard.
It follows the announcement by Willis’ family that he is retiring from acting due to a brain disorder, aphasia, which has affected his cognitive abilities.
Organizers of the raids received backlash on social media after the actor’s family made the announcement.
People demanded an apology after the awards group speculated that his condition “explains why he wanted to go out with a bang”.
The award’s founders also revoked a worst actress nomination for Shelley Duvall in the 1980 film The Shining on Thursday over alleged mistreatment by the late director Stanley Kubrick.
Every year on the eve of the Oscars, the Razzies spear what they consider Hollywood’s worst films and performances.
Founders say the award is no longer appropriate
Razzie organizers created a special category for Willis this year, nominating him eight times for Bruce Willis’ Worst Performance in a Movie of 2021 for each of his films, but revoked the award due to his recently announced diagnosis.
“When an individual’s medical condition is a factor in their decision-making and/or performance, we recognize that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie,” Razzie co-founders Mo Murphy and John Wilson said in a statement .
The Willis family made the announcement on Wednesday, four days after the raids.
The Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday that staff on film sets have expressed concerns about Willis’s health in recent years and filmmakers have reduced his roles due to his reduced capacity.
The Worst Actress nomination for the 1980 film was withdrawn
The Razzies’ founders said they withdrew Duvall’s nomination because “Stanley Kubrick handled her throughout production.”
Kubrick was known for demanding long hours and filming an extraordinary number of takes.
said Duval The Hollywood Reporter last year the experience was traumatizing.
When asked if Kubrick was unusually cruel or abusive, Duvall said, “He’s got that streak in him. He definitely has.”
Will Smith wins Redeemer Award
Four-time Razzie winner Will Smith received the Razzie Redeemer Award for his Oscar-winning portrayal of Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard.
Smith previously won the Redeemer Award for his work on Concussion in 2015 and again for his role as Genie in Aladdin in 2019.
Since the award was introduced in 2014, Hollywood heavyweights such as Mel Gibson, Jennifer Aniston, Keanu Reeves and Kristen Stewart have won the gong.
