‘Clerks III’ is completely different from its original typeface

The version of Employees III what we will actually achieve is radically different from Kevin Smith’s original vision. It turns out that when he first wrote the film, it was supposed to take place at pretty much the same starting point as 2019 Jay and Silent Bob reboot. This version of Employees III would begin with Randal and Dante in prison (after Jay and Bob were arrested for selling drugs from the former video store next to the QuickStop) as Hurricane Sandy hit the New York area.

They would leave the prison only to find that the Quick-Stop had been destroyed in a flood. The film would see people building a mock town in a movie theater parking lot, complete with a ramshackle shanty version of the Quick-Stop. The whole film was apparently about “dealing with grief”.

Of course, this storyline is pretty far fetched and doesn’t really seem like much employee Movie. Smith struggled for a while to come up with a plot that would better fit the film employee franchise when he had a near-fatal heart attack. Deciding this was a good backbone for the film, he got back to work.

Kevin Smith also spoke The Hollywood Reporter, where he explained a little more about the decision to switch the script in more detail. He said:

It felt like Clerks III had to be at Quick Stop, where it all started. That was able to feed everything else and when I gave Randal my heart attack it was like we were giving him the film too. Then it was off to the races.

Employees III will premiere on September 4th first in New Jersey and get a wider release on September 13th.
