Courteney Cox had one Scream when she thought she encountered a ghost at her home in LA.
The ‘Scream’ star, 57, recounted the horror story on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! – and shared why she felt she actually had to sell her Laurel Canyon pad because of it.
Cox is starring in upcoming Starz horror comedy The Shining Vale and host Jimmy Kimmel, 54, asked her if she had ever seen a ghost herself.
“I didn’t believe it at first,” she said, adding that her home was once owned by burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee and singer/songwriter Carole King.
The Friends actress then revealed that King, 80, came to have a séance with her to banish the ghost from the property. However, Cox was too impressed with the Grammy winner to pay attention to her supernatural activities.
“So, Carole King came to my house and she said there’s been a really ugly divorce and there’s a ghost in the house,” Cox said. “And I was, ‘Yeah, whatever.’ But other people who’ve stayed with me — like friends of mine — have said they’ve had an encounter with a woman sitting on the edge of the bed.”
But Cox then revealed the moment she actually got scared was when a delivery man came to her door and made a chilling statement.
“One day I was in the house because I wasn’t a believer. And the doorbell rang,” she recalls. “It was a UPS guy or something, and I opened the door and he said, ‘You know this house is haunted?’ “And I’m like, ‘Yeah, why? Why do you think that?'”
At that moment, the visitor indicated a ghostly presence too close to be comfortable.
“He’s like, ‘Cause there’s someone behind you,'” Cox said. “And I was like, ‘Let’s sell.'”
Cox dumped the house not long after that incident — and the rest is history.
“I could never sleep there alone again,” she confessed.
The mother-of-one has had her own spooky experience, having starred in Wes Craven’s “Scream” franchise since 1996, where she played TV journalist Gale Weathers. The fifth installment in the slasher series debuted in January with Cox reprising her role alongside “Scream” staples Neve Campbell, 48, and Cox’s ex-husband David Arquette, 50.
Arquette admitted in an interview with The New York Times earlier this year that it was “cathartic” to work on the film again with Cox. The actors were married from 1999 to 2013 and have one daughter, Coco, who turned 17 in June 2021.
“It’s a cathartic experience just to be able to play alongside Courteney,” said the Never Been Kissed actor. “It was 25 years of our lives. We grew up together. We have a child together.”
“Shining Vale” premieres Sunday, March 6th on Starz.
