The cast for the new Scream The sixth film in the slasher franchise comes this week with news officially confirming the return of Scream (2022) cast members Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding and Jasmine Savoy Brown. It was also announced earlier this week that actress Hayden Panettiere will reprise her role as Kirby Reed for the next sequel, reprising her role from 2011 scream 4. Another pillar of the franchise appears poised to return, as actress Courteney Cox has praised the film’s script while teasing that it looks like her deal to return during Gale Weathers is yet to be finalized.
speaking in an interview with ET, Cox was asked about the new film (which currently has no official title) and said: “I don’t know about deals and where things are, but I’ll tell you in the script – it’s a really good one. You actually have to get killed if you talk about it, so I won’t say anything.” Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will also return for the new film, which features a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The new Scream is slated to hit theaters on March 31, 2023, with cameras expected to start this summer.
Cox and co-star Neve Campbell remain the sole surviving cast members from the original 1996 Scream, which returned for the 2022 sequel; Tragically, David Arquettes Dewey was killed in the new film. However, Cox himself tried to convince the filmmakers not to go through with it. “It was sad because Dewey is such a beloved character and he’s so goofy, and I thought he brought such a comedic twist to the whole franchise,” said Cox Just for a change podcast earlier this year. “I think that was really — that was a downer.”
“I absolutely did, and I thought they heard me,” Cox added, speaking of suggesting the directors shoot footage that could tease Dewey that he might still be alive. “I remember saying on the pitch, ‘I just thought it would be a big mistake not to have an option. I understand why you want [to do it] – it makes it really serious. But then it wouldn’t be great if only [in] the last three minutes: SMS from the hospital.’ I wanted that to happen.” Speaking of her ex-husband’s death in real life on screen, she added, “It just feels weird.”
Hopefully Gale Weathers doesn’t end up on the cutting room floor in the sixth film.
