A storm system approaching Louisiana from the west is likely to trigger heavy showers and storms across the state on Friday, some of those storms could reach serious limits. The Storm Prediction Center on Friday put much of western Louisiana in the “low risk” category for severe storms. Meanwhile, much of the eastern half of the state will face a low risk of severe storms.
Today’s weather across the region will be calm, especially compared to what we expect during the day on Friday. The catalyst for the bumpy weather is an upper level low pressure system currently centered over the Texas Panhandle.
This system will be moving east during the day today. Winds will become light and fairly gusty later in the day, especially on Friday prior to the storm system. As of now, it looks like the worst of the weather will sweep into and through southern Louisiana in the early hours of Saturday morning.
But we cannot rule out showers or thunderstorms late Friday afternoon or Friday evening. The National Weather Service Office in Lake Charles is forecasting a 30% chance of showers and storms Friday afternoon, but that rain chance increases to 80% through late Friday night into the early hours of Saturday.
For now, it looks like the worst of the weather will leave the Acadiana territory on Saturday afternoon. The chance of rain is decreasing Saturday night and winds will become gusty from the north, but we don’t expect much cooling behind this storm system.
The rainfall levels across the region could be just what most of our lawns and gardens need. Model forecasts suggest precipitation levels of 1 to 3 inches will be common along the I-10 corridor from Friday afternoon through Saturday night.
Oh, and one more thing, don’t forget that this is the weekend we do the clock thing. You put your clock back an hour at bedtime on Saturday night when we revert to standard time for the winter months. It’s probably a good idea to also check the battery in your smoke alarm, trust us you won’t regret it.
