Tonight is the Battle of The Brandywine, in which old friends Downingtown East and Downingtown West face each other in their annual battle that evokes very high emotions on both sides of the aisle. At first glance, it seems that Downingtown East, sitting 6-1 in the season, will easily eliminate the Whippets fighting for their playoff lives. Downingtown West is 4-4 in the season after a 1-2 start.

The Whippets hit that 1-2 mark by playing what might be the best team in District 1 6A in Garnet Valley and a high performing Perkiomen Valley squad. But the Whippets are a very good team and looked like the team that many thought would be for the last two weeks. Downingtown West did it all but won against Coatesville, lost in the last few seconds and then beat a very good squad of Bishop Shanahan last week.

As cheesy as it sounds, you can really ditch the records when these two Downingtown teams clash. Downingtown likes to think that they are the epicenter of football in the area and borough. This game means more than Ches-Mont League tables and playoff points, it means a full year of bragging rights in a community where football is still king.

These Downingtown kids played against each other when they were younger and are now on opposite sides, and while many are friends, no one wants to beat the opponents more than the Downingtown kids. Football is very important in the county and in Lionville, and this is the game of the season for teams and staff.

Tonight the Kottmeyer Stadium will be full to the brim and both sides will be sky high before kick-off. The game is usually very close and in the past few years both coaching teams have shown a new fold to their Crosstown friends. Even some non-soccer fans in Downingtown are interested in the bottom line of this game and are in the community all week.

This game is truly a festival of football. These kids have dreamed of playing in this game since they first put a chin strap on. it’s so important in Downingtown. And this year, Downingtown East needs a win to keep up with the title in the Ches-Mont National Division and a possible top four finish in the 6A playoffs.

Downingtown West could be the more desperate team as the Whippets currently sit 17th in the 6A race, one of the golden 16 who qualify for the district playoffs. Before the season started, many thought the Whippets would be a top four team in District 1.

A brutal early schedule and some injuries have dashed those hopes, but the Whippets get into this game and play their best football of the season. The Whippets offensive has come to life and the defense against Bishop Shanahan was superb last week. A win over the Cougars would likely get the Whippets into the playoffs and make the season for the Whippets.

This is a very big neighborhood rivalry, and because of the pedigree and history of the two programs, the outcome resonates not just in Downingtown but across the district. two good coaching teams and a bunch of trained kids who just love football.

That’s what this game is about. Football is best when two teams give everything and leave everything on the field. Tonight, the two Downingtown teams will show what a great game high school football is.

You do it every year.
