“Friends” actor James Michael Tyler reveals stage 4 cancer diagnosis

James Michael Tyler, best known for playing Central Perk manager Gunther Friends, announced that he is fighting stage 4 prostate cancer.

The actor discussed his diagnosis today and said he was first diagnosed in September 2018 during his annual physical exam.

“I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that had spread to my bones. I’ve been dealing with this diagnosis for almost three years. … It’s level 4 (now). Late-stage cancer. So at some point, you know, it will probably get me, ”Tyler said.

He explained, “I was 56 years old at the time and they are screening for PSA, which is a prostate-specific antigen. That was an extraordinarily high number … So when I went online and saw the results of my blood test and blood count, I knew that something was obviously wrong. Almost immediately my doctor called me and said, ‘Hey, you have to come over tomorrow because I suspect you might have a serious problem with your prostate.’ “

Tyler’s cancer spread to his spine and paralyzed his lower body at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. His health was the reason he was only able to video chat during the Friends Goodbye special on HBO Max. Tyler wanted to be on stage with the cast, but he said, “… I didn’t mean to be a downer, you know? … I didn’t mean to say: ‘Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer.’ “

Tyler urges all men to get checked up, saying, “A lot of men, when caught this early, it’s easy to treat. I don’t want people to have to go through what I’ve been through. It’s not a … easy process. “
