The “move yourself” party

  • purpose: To see Jon in action on Friday and to celebrate him and his family after meeting
  • date: Friday, August 6, 2021
  • time: Immediately after the final
  • place: William Wollett Jr. Aquatics Center or the adjacent park (TBA)

Friends and family gather to pay tribute to the legendary trainer Jon Urbanchek during the Speedo Summer Championships-West 2021 in Irvine. Urbanchek spent 22 years (1982-2004) at the helm of the University of Michigan men’s team. He revived the program and at times won ten B1G championships in a row. Urbanchek continued to train at the club and professional level after his time in Michigan and was on the coaching staff of six different Olympic teams. He retired from coaching last summer. Two months later he was awarded the prestigious USA Swimming Award for his years as one of the most successful and respected swimming coaches in the country.

If you would like to attend the celebrations, there are three ways to attend:

  • Take part in the “Move it!” Campaign. celebrate in person
  • Write a quick message to Jon
  • Send a short “Thanks” video to Jon

The “Move Up!” The Organizing Committee shared the following details:

We’d love to put together a festival video to show the amazing impact Jon had on swimming. If you would like to send a very short thank you clip to [email protected] we would like to record it. Be short but be you. Maybe even call him in your native language. Adding a little bio to your clip for planning purposes will help the person putting it together the context of your identity and your place in Jon’s amazing world.

We’re also working on giving Jon a book with little greetings. Please send an email with your offer and a picture (as a swimmer with Jon, who you became after swimming … your choice!). Again, if you could add some context for Jon, it will be good for him and his family to read the book.

Jon’s wife, daughter, and granddaughter will be in attendance to partake in the fun. Let us show them how important he was to the swimming family and let us welcome them with open arms.
