The Friends of the Amarillo Public Library are hosting their annual free concert, Books to Broadway, for the first time in two years.

The free concert will take place on Thursday, November 3rd at 6pm in the Amarillo Civic Center Heritage Room

Books to Broadway is a musical review of songs from Broadway musicals based on or inspired by books. This year’s concert celebrates its 10th anniversary with songs from favorite shows throughout concert history, including numbers from shows like “Hamilton”, “Into the Woods”, “The Secret Garden” and more.

“Our freshman year was 2011 but we had to cancel 2020 and 2021 due to COVID so this event is our 10th concert and we are very excited to host it,” said Stacy Clopton, APL’s PR and program coordinator.

According to Clopton, the idea came from another library and was adopted by the APL after being sponsored by Friends of the APL. Every year since Books to Broadway was conceived, the concert has been performed by Dr. Robert Hansen, Principal of the West Texas A&M University School of Music, is producing. This year the concert will be performed by WT faculty, but in the past it has also featured students, members of the Amarillo Little Theater, members of the Amarillo Opera and more.

“There are a few songs that are obviously related to a book like ‘The Secret Garden,’ but there are also songs that people might not know were based on a book or were originally a book. One of which is ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ will be included in the concert, which was originally inspired by a science fiction short story, including ‘Green Thoughts’ by John Collier and ‘The Reluctant Orchid’ by Arthur C. Clarke,” said Clopton .

Doors open at 18:00 where attendees can bid on items as part of their silent auction and enjoy the free coffee and dessert bar. The show starts at 7 p.m. During the break, the winners of the silent auction will be announced; Items included in the auction were donated or made specifically for the event. Each item also comes with a free book. A part of the auction is, for example, a barbecue gift basket including a cookbook.
