How will Scream fare without Neve Campbell?

After the success of the fifth part of the Scream franchise was released in early January and became a smashing box office success, the sequel was immediately greenlit and fans eager to see what else Ghostface has in store for its victims. Matt Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillet, also known as Radio Silence, will return as directors, with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick also returning as writers. It seemed like an escape for the rest of the cast who survived Ghostface to return for the sixth part.

Cast announcements began by confirming that this has been flooded scream 6 Courteney Cox will reprise her role as Gale Weathers. The returning cast also includes Jenna Ortega, who played Tara Carpenter and was Ghostface’s first victim Scream (2022), Melissa Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter, Billy’s daughter and Tara’s older sister, and Jasmine Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who play twins Mindy and Chad, respectively. Also Hayden Panettiere, who played Kirby scream 4, will reprise her role, an announcement that excites the veteran Scream fans.

However, the biggest name confirmed not to return was Never Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott and is the center of the Ghostface murders. The news shocked fans, as Campbell himself made the announcement to Variety last week, Saying:

“As a woman, I’ve had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my worth, especially when it comes to it Scream. I felt that the offer I was presented with did not match the value I brought to the franchise. It was a very difficult decision to continue. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You have always been so incredibly supportive of me. I am forever grateful to you and for what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

There is no doubt that scream 6 won’t be the same unless our heroic Sidney defeats Ghostface. Apart from how will scream 6 get ahead without its star Neve Campell?

Early Announcements and Negotiations

After the success of Scream (2022) there have already been discussions about a sixth one Scream with Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and even David Arquette, who died in the fifth film, expressing interest in returning for a sequel. To the delight of many, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass gave the green light for the sequel, and representatives said, “We are extremely grateful to the fans around the world who have enthusiastically embraced our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family.” Radio Silence added, “Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and walking in the lineage that Wes and Kevin so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream saga to life.”

Once the sequel was confirmed, Cox and Campbell were approached to return scream 6. Cox mentioned reading the script and said it was “really good”. She was then officially confirmed for her May return along with franchise newcomers Ortega, Barrera, Brown and Gooding, and Panettiere.

Meanwhile, on June 6, Campbell announced he would not be returning to the sequel due to salary negotiations scream 6 carry on without Sidney Prescott.

Scream fans and co-stars react

Campbell’s testimony left fans and companions Scream Co-stars agree that the Scream Franchise wouldn’t be what it is without Campbell. David Arquette, who was also in all five Scream Movies starring Campbell, responded to the news by telling Comic Book:

“Did Tom Cruise take less money for [the Top Gun sequel]? F**k no dude. So why should a woman take less? Why wouldn’t you pay her more over the course of the series? was scream 5 a hit or no hit? It was a hit. Did they make that much money? Yes. Should Neve Campbell be paid for the work she did in five films in a franchise? Yes, because she’s a female lead in one of the most successful horror franchises.”

Miscellaneous Scream Co-stars like Jasmine Savoy Brown, Emma Roberts and Jamie Kennedy also helped Campbell with her departure.

Scream fans agree. Campbell is someone who has continued to push the franchise forward. From starring in the first Scream 1996 starring in this era of horror fans in the fifth installment of Scream, that attracted a new generation of horror fans, the franchise successfully brought the two generations of horror fans together. There hasn’t been another successful franchise in the horror genre that continues to be a box office hit and critically acclaimed with every sequel.

What to expect from Scream 6

Shortly after news of Campbell’s exit scream 6, the plot of the upcoming movie was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, which “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface murders as they leave Woodsboro behind and begin a new chapter”. Ortega also mentions it in an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the MTV Movie Awards scream 6 is the most violent Ghostface ever.

While it’s no secret, the franchise has wanted to expand into new characters in the franchise to escape Ghostface’s Wrath of Terror. Fans continue to expect involvement from the original characters in one way or another. Here we hope for the sixth Scream will still somehow involve Sidney Prescott, with Neve Campbell returning for all other future films in the franchise.
