With a star-studded clientele that includes Jennifer Aniston, Chrissy Teigen, Jessica Alba and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and a skincare line that has taken the beauty world by storm, Shani Darden is the beautician the A-list entrusts their face to. They all go to her Los Angeles studio for one reason: to get the best skin of their lives.

While Darden’s signature facials are known for being high-tech, her advice is refreshingly straightforward, especially when it comes to dealing with summer skin. Humidity, the potential for UV damage, clogged pores, and arctic climates all affect durability, so you may need to reconsider your beauty arsenal.

Here, Jennifer Aniston’s esthetician shares her top summer skincare tips, from SPF to doubling your sunscreen to the only product switches you really need to make during a heatwave.

Be diligent with your sunscreen application

“Sun exposure is the number one cause of aging, so make sure you protect your skin! All the things people complain about like dark spots, loss of elasticity, and wrinkles can be prevented by wearing sunscreen and staying out of the sun as much as possible. Whether you are indoors or outdoors, it is important that you wear sunscreen. Find a formula that you love, that works well with your skin type and that you will wear on a daily basis. You also want to make sure you reapply it every two hours supergoop! Play Everyday Lotion with SPF 50 because it is slightly moisturizing but does not cause constipation. If I plan to be at the beach or pool all day, I make sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and if possible, sit under an umbrella. I’ve also been known to wear a UV sun visor!”

Don’t forget your lips and hands

“Your lips and hands are often some of the first parts of your body to show signs of aging. When applying sunscreen, be sure to cover your hands and reapply after washing. Remember to also protect your lips with an SPF lip balm or gloss. I love the supergoop! Lip filter with SPF 40 as it is a non-sticky gloss that helps protect. I usually always have a few on hand.”

It’s a myth that you can’t use retinol or acids in the summer

“If you’re someone who spends a lot of time in the sun, I recommend not using a retinol product. However, if you don’t generally spend much time outside during the summer, it’s perfectly fine to use retinol or acids. Retinol Reformas well as mine Lactic Acid Serumare both safe to use as long as you wear sunscreen during the day and limit the time you spend in the sun.”

Look for vitamin C for an extra layer of protection

“Use an antioxidant-rich vitamin C serum for extra protection against environmental stressors and sun damage. I love it iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serumespecially if you want to soothe the skin and even out the tone.”
