World Championship wrestling personality Judy Bagwell, mother of WCW wrestler Marcus “Buff” Bagwell, who starred in storylines with her son on WCW programs, has passed away. The news was announced in a post on Twitter on behalf of the Bagwell family, revealing that Judy had died after struggling with dementia. She was 78 years old.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that the Matriarch of the Bagwell family passed away last Friday,” the post said. “Judy Bagwell has been blessed over the years with three great children, a loving husband, and so many great memories. Thank you to everyone who has asked about her over the years and kept her in your prayers as she battled dementia when she was 78 . RIP Judy 1943-2021. “
Longtime wrestling fans who remember watching WCW television during “Monday Night Wars” will remember Bagwell for her involvement in some of the bizarre storylines of the now-defunct company. At one point she held the WCW World Tag Team Championship with Rick Steiner when the wrestler selected her as a replacement after his partner sustained an injury. WWE, which has since acquired the WCW library, does not officially recognize this title reign, but wrestling fans remember.
Judy Bagwell is also known for her appearance on WCW’s New Blood Rising pay-per-view in 2000. Her son Buff Bagwell wrestled Chris Kanyon in a so-called “Judy Bagwell on a Pole” match. Judy wasn’t technically on a pole, even though she was hanging high above the air on a forklift. The stipulation was that if Kanyon won, Judy should serve as his valet permanently. Despite actor David Arquette stepping in to support Kanyon, Buff won the game.
Vince Russo, who was WCW’s chief writer at the time and who brought Judy to WCW television, addressed her death with a tweet. The author, who long defended the controversial plot, said of Judy: “It is so sad to hear of the loss of Judy Bagwell. What a great, great lady who fell in love with her son. RIP Mrs. Bagwell. I will ALWAYS defend our work were a STAR !!! “
Other wrestling personalities also offer their condolences to Marcus and the Bagwell family. Elijah Burke tweeted, “Thoughts and prayers go to former WCW star Buff Bagwell on the death of his mother Judy Bagwell. May the wonderful memories find solace. ~ PHS”
Fans also pay tribute and share memories of Judy on WCW TV. Many also realized how much Buff adored his mother. A tweet on the WellsMania Podcast says, “RIP to Judy Bagwell. When I met Buff Bagwell a few years ago, he spoke very highly of his mother and told me some funny stories about her. You could tell how much she meant to him.” . I am definitely sending strength and light to Buff Bagwell and his family. “
We would also like to express our condolences to the Bagwell family at this painful time. Rest in peace, Judy Bagwell. Wrestling fans can watch her appearances on WCW television as well as Judy Bagwell in a pole match at New Blood Rising 2000 streamed on NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
