Original Scream’s first script killed Dewey, reveals Courteney Cox


Scream star Courteney Cox confirms that David Arquette’s Dewey was supposed to die in the 1996 original, but test screenings convinced Craven otherwise.

Courteney Cox Reveals David Arquette’s Dewey Was Originally Set To Die In The First Screenplay Scream Movie. Both actors are mainstays of the evergreen Scream franchise and have appeared in every part of the series so far. They can currently be seen in Scream (2022), which hit theaters exclusively on January 14.

the Scream The franchise started in 1996 under the direction of the late Wes Craven, who managed every installment until his death in 2015. An in-depth analysis of slasher franchises and tropes, the series follows a group of individuals from the fictional Woodsboro, California as Ghostface pursues them. Unlike many slasher franchises, the killer is never the same from film to film and is almost always someone co-opting the Ghostface personality to pursue Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) for personal gain or revenge. In the series, Cox plays badass journalist Gale Weathers and Arquette plays Woodsboro Deputy (and eventually Sheriff) Dewey Riley. The newest Scream is directed by Ready or Not Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Sidney, Gale and Dewey once again face off against a white-masked killer.

Now, with the latest edition in the Scream franchise in theaters and making a ton of money at the box office, new information about the franchise as a whole has come to light. In particular, Cox opens up Pedestrian.TV about working on the original Scream and confirms that Arquettes Dewey was originally sentenced to death in an early draft of the screenplay. However, Craven ultimately spared it due to the positive response it received at test screenings. Check out Cox’s full quote below:

I was with one of the producers not too long ago and there was a time, I think it was the first Scream, where David’s character Dewey was going to be killed off, then they saw him come across and people loved him so they scrapped it.

In the original Scream, Dewey is badly injured while investigating Ghostface’s arrival at the party during the film’s climax. In the end, however, he turns out to be alive, suffering from a limp along the way scream 2 But he stayed close and remained one of the main protagonists of the Scream series for most of its run.

Unfortunately, Dewey’s luck finally ran out. Though the character managed to survive the reigns of four Ghostface killers, he was ultimately killed by the latest iteration in the latest film – in a role not unlike Han Solo The Force Awakens. That said, it’s a testament to the character’s power that he was spared so many times by Craven after the first Scream and finally used as a key sacrificial lamb on that final outing.
