This morning came the confirmation that the box office success of 2022 is pending Scream, the fifth in the meta-slasher franchise, has fueled development for a sixth Scream movie officially start. Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment announced today that the directors of Radio Silence (Ready or Not, V/H/S,) with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will return at the helm and James Vanderbilt (zodiac) & Guy Busick (Ready or Not) will co-write the screenplay again. Production on the next film is set to begin this summer, likely for a 2023 release, but one thing that remains unconfirmed is the casting, but fans already have a specific demand in mind.
The Scream franchise was known from the start for bringing back its old characters. Even 2011s scream 4Despite introducing a new generation of survivors, the return saw original stars David Arquette, Courteney Cox and Neve Campbell, all of whom were back for 2022’s fifth film. One character missing from the new film was fan favorite Kirby Reed, played by Hayden Panettiere in the 2011 sequel, but what the film made clear is that Panettiere’s character is still alive somewhere out there and fans are demanding that she return (a request that may coincide with the commentary embedded in the new film).
In a moment mocking YouTube accounts dedicated to tearing down major movie franchises, a blinking Easter egg on the page Scream (2022) confirms Kirby’s fate. Alongside the main video that is playing is a featured video titled “Interview with Woodsboro Survivor Kirby Reed” and has a photo of Panettiere as a thumbnail. This Easter egg was immediately spotted by fans and was what they’re clinging to in the hopes it’ll make an appearance in the next movie, see what fans are saying below.
