Halloween may be over, but there is still a new “scream” rate. And in the first featurette of the upcoming film, we get some tantalizing new clues as to the direction of this one, the fifth entry in the franchise started by the Wes Craven classic in 1996. See it above.
The featurette contains the typical snippets of talking head interviews, but also offers some clues for the “scream” believers.
Melissa Berrera, who plays Sam Carpenter, said, “My character, Sam, is going to be the target of the Ghostface killer. She asks Dewey for help. ”
As the previous teaser trailer suggested, all new characters have ties to existing characters from the franchise, but no one on the series has the Carpenter surname. Is she the child of a “scream” universe marriage or has she changed her name to distance herself from an unsavory lineage? It’s also interesting that she pulls Dewey (played again by David Arquette) into it. But should she help or be the killer’s next victim?
Dylan Minnette, strangely missing from the original trailer considering he’s a pretty big draw, plays a new character named Wes Hicks. He described the new film as “the perfect mix of new energy and also what made it so special”. Don’t say more Dylan!
Perhaps the most revealing quote is from Courteney Cox, the original Gale Weathers (who continues its news reporter duties based on some new footage), said: “Things happen that are kind of shocking. I still can’t believe it. ”This dialogue is immediately followed by footage of Gale screaming, suggesting that Deputy Dewey’s days may be numbered.
There is also a really great take of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and Cox’s Gale Weathers standing outside the house which we think will be the climax of the first “Scream”. They hear a bloodthirsty scream and Cox turns to Campbell and says: “Sounds about right.” The delivery is perfect and dry and so through and through “Scream”. Excitement rises (carefully) …
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, the new Scream is written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, based on characters by Kevin Williamson (who is also executive producer). Other cast members include Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Marley Shelton (back from Scream 4), and Jasmin Savoy Brown (who plays Mindy Meeks-Martin, so at least we know she’s linked to Randy Meeks, Jamie Kennedy’s character from the start is one). More will no doubt be revealed in the weeks leading up to the movie’s release. And we will have everything under control.
“Scream” will be in theaters on January 14, 2022.
