Many of us were surprised to hear that legendary comedian Norm Macdonald has passed away. Like many of us, I didn’t even know he was sick. He suffered from a very private cancer battle. Most of us didn’t know he had cancer for two very heartwarming reasons.

Norm Macdonald died at the age of 61 after a very long 9 year battle with cancer that I didn’t know was fighting. As we now find out, Norm didn’t want to “pull the room down” by telling friends, family, or fans that he had cancer. That makes so much sense from someone who always made us laugh. Norm also wanted to know that people always laughed at his jokes and no longer laughed out of empathy.
Norm died this morning. His longtime girlfriend Lori Jo Hoekstra was one of the few who knew and she said Deadline …
He was most proud of his comedy. He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comedian. He once wrote: “A joke should surprise someone, it should never be flattering.” He’s certainly never flattered. Norm is terribly missed.
Norm also remembers his work The Dennis Miller Show and Roseanne before joining SNL. We love him from the Weekend Update and will enjoy his comedy that outlives him. RIP norm, you’re already missing.
