I thought I’d seen every single possible permutation of the Die Hard Formula – or at least I had exhausted my desire to see more permutations. But then came violent night. Which basically is Die Hard at Christmas – well, okay Die Hard was Die Hard at Christmas, that’s right. But this Die Hard on Christmas actually features Santa Claus in the role of John McClane.
And we’re not talking about a mall Santa Claus who has to save the mall he works in after it was overrun by terrorists. Well, that’s the legitimate, lives-at-the-North Pole, hangs-with-flying-reindeer Santa Claus. Played by David Harbour, he’s ready to kick some butt – and because the film is being produced by the same company that gave us John Wick, Atomic Blondeand No one, he will do it in ingeniously brutal and bloody ways. (The gag with the sharpened candy cane…ouch.)
I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to see this movie based on the description alone, but if you need more convincing, here’s the trailer:
Here is the official synopsis of the film:
From 87North, the naked producers of Nobody, John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Bullet Train and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, comes a dark Christmas action comedy that says you should always bet on red. When a team of mercenaries break into a wealthy family’s mansion on Christmas Eve and take everyone hostage, the team isn’t prepared for a surprise fighter: Santa Claus (David Harbour, Black Widow, Stranger Things series) is on the premises, and He’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.
The possibilities for bad Christmas action hero puns are literally endless. violent night opens in cinemas on December 2nd. Ho ho ho.
