His family kept ponies and he began competing in horseback riding at a young age, becoming a member of the United States World Cup Saddle Seat Equitation Team in 1999 and winning a world title in 2009.

He graduated from Northwestern Lehigh High School in 1987 and Gettysburg College in 1991, where he was elected a Phi Beta Kappa and was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.
