Scream (aka Scream 5) is a horror film directed by Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) and written by Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett). . It is the fifth installment in the Scream series. Despite being billed as a reboot, it is a direct sequel to Scream 4 (2011) and the first film in the series not to have been directed by Wes Craven since his death in 2015. The film is dedicated to Craven at the beginning of the credits.
Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Jasmine Savoy Brown and Sonia Ammar star in the film, which also stars Roger L. Jackson, Marley Shelton, Skeet Ulrich, Courteney Cox , David Arquette and Neve Campbell, returning from previous installments.
The film is set twenty-five years after the first Woodsboro murders, when a new Ghostface emerges and begins hunting a group of young people, all connected in some way to the earlier atrocities. Like previous installments, Scream parodies the trend of reboots and legacy sequels by combining slasher violence with black humor and a “whodunit” mystery. In addition, the film points to fanboy culture and the difference between “elevated horror” and classic slasher films.
Although the possibility of a fifth and sixth Scream film was discussed following the release of Scream 4 in 2011, Craven, writer Kevin Williamson and executive producer Harvey Weinstein expressed doubts about continuing the franchise due to the fourth film’s poor box office performance. Spyglass Media Group bought the rights to the Scream franchise in November 2019 following the 2017 sexual assault lawsuits against Weinstein and the liquidation of The Weinstein Company, confirming that a new film would be made in the future.
Williamson, who returned as executive producer the following year, confirmed the film would not be a remake and would be directed by Radio Silence in March 2020. Campbell and Arquette were set to return later this month with Cox and the others, with the cast to follow later in the summer. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, production on the film was delayed and shooting took place in North Carolina between September and November 2020. Many different versions of the script were prepared and several more sequences were filmed to avoid plot leaks.
Paramount Pictures released Scream to theaters in the United States on January 14, 2022 during the COVID-19 epidemic. The film grossed $137 million worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2022. It was acclaimed by critics for upholding Craven’s reputation and providing thought-provoking meta-commentary on horror films, with some naming it the best of the films are Scream sequels. In February 2022, it was announced that a sequel would be made.
